Hearn Boung
Who didn't survive
Between 1991 and 1994 I photographed the devastating impact of anti-personnel landmines in Cambodia, resulting in a book co-authored with Paul Davies, entitled War of the Mines, Cambodia, Landmines and the Impoverishment of a Nation. At the time, it was estimated there were 10 million landmines in the country; one mine for every man, woman and child.

Hearn Boung, a 31-year-old Cambodian soldier stepped on a mine months after a ceasefire was announced. He died shortly after this photograph was taken. Battambang, Cambodia, December 1991.
